GCSE English Tutoring — Unlock Higher Grades in Language & Literature
Two separate GCSEs, each with its own demands. Our specialist tutors teach the precise essay technique, analytical skills, and exam confidence that move students from Grade 4 to Grade 7+.
What We Cover
English Language and English Literature are separate qualifications with different skills, texts, and exam formats. We cover both — and can run both in a single session where time allows.
English Language
Reading comprehension & creative/transactional writing
Reading Unseen Texts
AQA Section A (Q1–4): information retrieval, language analysis, structure analysis, comparison. Board-specific question techniques.
Descriptive & Narrative Writing
Crafting compelling openings, varied sentence structures, sensory detail, effective endings — all rewarded at Grade 7+.
Transactional Writing
Letters, articles, speeches, and reviews. Adapting tone, register, and form to audience and purpose — a key mark scheme criterion.
Language & Structure Analysis
Precise use of terminology, developed effect analysis, moving beyond surface-level comment to interpretative insight.
English Literature
Texts, analysis & comparative essay writing
Shakespeare
Macbeth, Romeo & Juliet — themes, character, context, dramatic effect. Practising both extract and whole-text questions.
19th Century Prose
A Christmas Carol, Jekyll & Hyde — contextual embedding, Victorian society, language choices, and structural analysis.
Modern Texts
An Inspector Calls, Lord of the Flies — social context, character purpose, dramatic/literary technique.
Poetry
Power & Conflict or Love & Relationships clusters — comparison skills, unseen poetry technique, language and form analysis.
Exam boards covered

Students learn PEEL and advanced essay structures that the mark scheme rewards — making written argument clear and progressive.
Quote Selection
Choosing short, precise, embedded quotes that can carry significant analytical weight — a skill that separates Grade 5 from Grade 7+.
Language Analysis Technique
Moving beyond naming devices to fully developed effect analysis — exploring connotations, audience impact, and authorial intent.
Timed Essay Practice
Regular timed essays under realistic exam conditions, with detailed mark scheme feedback on each draft.
Exam Board-Specific Technique
Each board (AQA, Edexcel, OCR, WJEC) has distinct question formats. We teach the specific approach each requires.

GCSE English Success Stories
“My son has dyslexia and was really struggling with English Literature. His Nisus tutor adapted everything to his learning style and taught him essay frameworks that really worked. He got a Grade 6 which we honestly didn't think was possible.”
Jenny Thompson
Parent — Leeds
“I could write but my essays never scored well. My tutor showed me exactly how to structure analysis points and how to use quotes effectively. Once I understood what the mark scheme wanted, my grades jumped.”
Priya Nair
GCSE Student — London
“Both English Language and Literature were underperforming. The Nisus tutor covered both in the same sessions very efficiently. My daughter improved two grades in Language and one in Literature — beyond what we hoped for.”
Caroline West
Parent — Bristol
