Why A Level Maths is Hard — and How We Fix It
Three distinct gaps cause most A level maths underperformance. We address each directly.
The algebra fluency gap
GCSE algebra is slower and clumsier than A level demands. Students who haven't automated their algebra skills spend cognitive effort on the basics, leaving no capacity for the harder problem-solving. We address this first.
The application gap
Knowing techniques is not enough — A level requires knowing which technique to deploy when the question doesn't spell it out. We develop this strategic thinking through varied problem sets and explicit decision-making practice.
The exam gap
Performing under timed pressure is a separate skill from understanding maths. We integrate timed practice from early on so that exam conditions are familiar, not alarming.
Supporting the Most Competitive Maths Applications
Top mathematics and engineering programmes demand more than strong A level grades. We prepare students for every stage of the application process.
- STEP (Cambridge): Paper I, II, and III — specialist preparation with Cambridge graduates
- MAT (Oxford / Imperial): Oxford & Imperial admissions test preparation
- TMUA: Test of Mathematics for University Admission
- Personal Statement: Maths personal statements for competitive university applications
- Interview Preparation: Maths-heavy degree interview practice and problem-solving technique

Results That Speak
From GCSE algebra gaps to Cambridge STEP offers — our students achieve the grades they need.
“I needed Maths and Further Maths support for my Cambridge application. My Nisus tutor pushed me hard and the additional STEP preparation was invaluable. Cambridge offer received — I wouldn't have got there without Nisus.”
Oliver Davies
A Level Student — Bristol
“My daughter went from a D in her Year 12 mocks to an A in the actual AS exam. The turnaround was remarkable — her tutor rebuilt her algebra foundations and her confidence came with it.”
Fatima Khan
Parent — Manchester
“Mechanics was my weak point — I just couldn't visualise the problems. My Nisus tutor used very clear diagrams and step-by-step approaches that made it click. A* in the end, which I genuinely didn't expect.”

A Level Maths — Your Questions Answered
Everything you need to know about our programmes and how we support your child.
A level maths covers fundamentally new content (calculus, trigonometry beyond GCSE, mechanics, statistics) and demands much faster algebraic manipulation. Students who coasted through GCSE maths with natural ability often find A level requires genuine effort and structured study for the first time. We help bridge this gap.
